In this assignment, you will reflect on how a CIT approach can improve lines of communication and crisis intervention outcomes for those involved in crises.
First, you can begin by reading the peer-reviewed academic journal article, Utilizing Crisis Intervention Teams in Prison to Improve Officer Knowledge, Stigmatizing Attitudes, and Perception of Response Options.
In your reflection paper, summarize the main findings of the journal article and reflect on what you have read. You will apply the concepts you have learned.
describing how the journal article (and NAMI webpage) connect to the ideas learned in this course. As part of your reflection, be sure to define the concept of crisis intervention, explain the distinct categories of crises (i.e., developmental, situational, existential, and ecosystemic), and describe how some of these categories are related to crisis intervention team programs, safety, and mental health. In addition to highlighting other key terms and concepts, you will point out the methodological and theoretical strengths and/or weaknesses you can identify in the research article. Last, you will offer your insight on crisis intervention team programs, discuss how you think they could potentially operate more effectively, and describe what other kinds of research you would like to learn about in this area. Your paper will be approximately four or more pages (double-spaced).
To promote critical thinking, you will create and place one discussion question on the last page of your reflection paper. This discussion question can be general (e.g., a basic question about a topic in the article that stood out to you), something that connects the article topic to current events, or something you have read about in this course or another human services-related course.
