Table 6.1 in Discover Your True North describes the extrinsic and intrinsic motivations for success. Oftentimes, the intrinsic motivations that are valuable to our personal growth, evolve into extrinsic motivations that are focused on status and achievement (George, 2015). The intrinsic motivator that is most important to me is personal growth. I believe that to lead others, you have to be able to successfully lead yourself. This develops through self-awareness and constant analysis and innovation (Odom et al., 2012). Since I was young, I was hyperaware of myself which was good and bad. However, it allowed me to be my own coach, agent, and teacher. I knew what I had to do to be successful and I set myself up to achieve greatness.
The extrinsic motivation I relate with the most is social status. It is a very human desire to be on the top of the pecking order, we see this in biological and psychological studies. One study specifically analyzed the effect of perceived self social status and academic performance. It was found that the individuals with a higher perceived self social status had higher GPAs (Destin et al., 2012). Those findings are expected, however, I think it is a chicken or the egg problem. As a young student, I never struggled academically and often was at the top of my class. I felt confident because of this and continued to do well. But, did I do well because of my higher perceived social status, or did my higher perceived social status push me to do well? Either way, social status is a huge motivator for individuals in the workplace.
