O’Brien CH 11
In chapter 11 O’Brien mentions the importance of fostering hope for end-of-life care. Please reflect back to chapter 3 and the Spiritual Well Being (SWB) assessment and of the correlation between SWB and one’s outlook. Consider too, the abundance of literature documenting the relationship between personal faith beliefs and positive coping skills regarding illness and disability.
1. How would you nurture hope during end-of-life care for a believer (in God)?
2. How would you nurture hope during end-of-life care for a non-believer (in-God)?
3. As a nurse, why do you think it takes courage to provide spiritual care to the dying patient?
4. What were some of the barriers to providing spiritual care at the end-of-life did O’Brien identify?
5. Why do you think this is so?
6. How could you mitigate these barriers?
