This course has been one of the saddest, yet most knowledgeable courses that I’ve enjoyed the most this semester. It’s been challenging learning more in depth of somethings that I’ve already known, but on the women’s point of view. Learning about the start of colonialism and the indigenous, the logic of elimination, slavery, Jim/Jane Crow era, what makes one human, non-human, or sub-human, lynching, the Prison Industrial Complex, the latinx community, femicide, and the end of Roe V. Wade. All this information really opened my eyes even more to what the world is and why women have fought for themselves and for the next generation. What I have enjoyed the most was talking about the Jim/Jane Crow era. It’s such a sad time in our history. One of my goals is to teach Ethnic Studies at the high school and maybe Sociology at the college level at some point in time, so I love gaining this knowledge and learning more every day. One thing I wish we went over a little more was Roe V. Wade and reproductive rights. I know there was such little time to go over 400 years of history, but I think learning about Margaret Sanger would have added more to why women need their freedom, and the right to choose. She is the reason we have planned parenthood today. If I was an advisor to the president, I would say put personal values aside, and say it was his daughter going through all the oppression women have suffered from over the years. What would they want to change? Giving the president facts of gender based violence and proving an argument might bring awareness to why things need to change. We live in the 21st century and it seems like we are just going back in time. We might not see change right away since there are so many that have certain values that won’t change. But after educating society on issues, they might have a change of heart. As many people are very closed minded, why not see what women want by asking the people. The goal at the end of the day is to give the next generation a better place than the last one, so lets move forward in society instead of backwards.
