Creating a Life Mission Statement: A Journey to Self-Discovery and Fulfillment

This project is based on a modification of Steven Covey’s mission statement program from the book Seven Habits
of Highly Effective People and includes the following components (please begin a section using each of the
following headings):
Introduction–Briefly, how would you introduce yourself to a long lost sister or brother you had not seen since
you were three?
Eulogy or Late Life Celebration–A statement of what you desire representatives of your 1) immediate family, 2)
friends, 3) co-workers, 4) community figures, and 5) your “ideal observer” to be able to say about you at the end
of your life (eulogy) or a late in life celebration (think 105 years of age and enjoying yourself).
Vision–A concise statement of the end you desire derived from your eulogy or late in life celebration.
Mission–A statement of the processes by which you plan to accomplish this end.
Values/Behaviors–A statement of the rules that guide your life processes.
Talents–The assets you bring to your life, such as your temperament, and those you plan to develop.
Roles–A description of the roles life requires of you, such as, mother, leader, and spouse.
Meaning–Given the above work, what is there to life? Briefly, is there meaning?
Conclusions–What impact, if any, has this exercise had on you? Would your organization change in any way if
everyone went through this exercise?
OPTIONAL for this assignment are the following two Headings
Goals–Now given your vision/mission, what do you want to accomplish in each role?
Plans–How are you going to accomplish each goal?
Again, it is not necessary to complete the “Goals” and “Plans” sections for this project…but you should do this
for yourself as soon as possible.
