S????????????????????COM 122 Fundamental Human Communication, Individual Presentations Persuasive Speech Description Persuasive Speech Purpose: The purpose of this speech is for students to continue to gain greater proficiency constructing messages consistent with the diversity of communication purpose, audience, context, and ethics, and to continue to develop their public speaking knowledge, skills and abilities as they encode and deliver these messages. The persuasive speech expands this to include the use of information and arguments to convert, modify or maintain an audience’s attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors Persuasive Speech Outline, References, and slides (30 points): In addition to delivering the persuasive speech, students are to submit a single document that includes the formal outline of their speech, a free-standing works cited page with APA format citing all sources of supporting materials, and a copy of their PowerPoint slides. This single document must be submitted as a a Microsoft Word file upload on Canvas. The student is to include a copy of their PowerPoint slides as a separate component of this same assignment The persuasive speech must include at least five academically-appropriate sources of supporting material per course requirements. The sources of these references must include at least one book (not a book published as an e-book only), one scholarly source and one article from a credible magazine, newspaper or periodical. Students must also orally cite full, complete references for all citations in their speech. Failure to meet any of these criteria will result in a loss of points for the speech. In addition to the works cited page, a copy of the PowerPoint slides for the persuasive speech is also to be included as a component of the document to be submitted on Canvas. Failure to fulfill any part of this requirement will result in a loss of points for the speech. Persuasive Speech Presentation (100 points): Each student wil????????????????????l deliver an original, researched, 5- minute persuasive extemporaneous speech. The goal of this presentation is to convert, modify, or maintain/strengthen the audience’s attitudes, beliefs, or behaviors. This speech must utilize PowerPoint and include a minimum of eight slides that support and enhance speech content. Other visual aids may also be used. Failure to comply with any of the following aspects of delivery will have a negative impact on the final speech grade. ? Special emphasis should be placed on 1) identifying and justifying the relevance of the speech topic to the student’s specific audience, 2) presenting speech content in a clearly organized form, 3) delivering the speech fluently and conversationally, 4) finding, using, and orally citing credible, relevant sources, 5) clarity, content, and construction of persuasive arguments, and 6) a legitimate attempt to sensitively persuade the audience. ? Speeches require outside research and documentation of at least 5 academically-appropriate sources, not used in another speech; referenced in good bibliographic form on a works cited page included with a copy of the slides; AND fully orally cited during the speech as well. Students must cite at least 5 academically appropriate references (as described in the course text and documents) for this reference page, which is to accompany the outline for their persuasive speech. ? At the risk of repeating myself, once again, the sources of the supporting materials used must include at least one book (not a book published as an e-book only ), one scholarly source and one article from a credible magazine, newspaper or other periodical. The student must also orally cite five (5) full, complete references during their speech ? When presenting speeches, men and women are required to wear attire that complies with the speech day guidelines. ?
